Hydraulic seals and pneumatic seals are precision-engineered components used in cylinder systems in static and dynamic applications. They are designed to prevent leakage, protect internal components, and maintain system pressure. Their role is crucial to maintain the efficiency and performance of the system, while extending the cylinder’s life cycle.

Hi-Tech Seals provides an extensive selection of rod seals and piston seals for single-acting and double-acting systems. They are available in numerous materials and lip configurations to suit different pressures, temperatures, media, and application requirements.

Main Functions

1.) Prevent Leakage – These sealing components maintain internal pressure and prevent media leakage by creating pressure barriers between moving parts. Piston seals prevent pressurized media from bypassing to the opposite side of the chamber, while rod seals stop internal media from escaping the cylinder as the rod extends and retracts.

They can adapt to withstand different pressures demanded in the application. When system pressure presses onto the elastomer, it causes the elastomer to expand, conforming to the surfaces being sealed, providing a tighter seal. Back-up rings can help support the elastomer to withstand high pressures by keeping the elastomer in place and preventing it from entering the clearance gap.

2.) Prevent Contamination – Wipers, in particular, act as a barrier to keep dirt and debris out of the cylinder, preventing external contaminants from entering the system and protecting internal components.

O-Rings

O-Rings grooves allow the O-Ring to be squeezed diametrically out-of-round even before the pressure is applied. The distortion of the O-Rings is a resilient elastic compound that fills the leakage path, thus creating a seal.

Wear Rings

Wear rings help keep the piston and rod centered and prevent metal-to-metal contact between components. This allows for even distribution of pressures to limit the chances of damaging the components and seals.

O-rings are among the most widely used sealing solutions in industrial applications due to their simplicity, cost-efficiency, and ease of installation. However, O-rings can experience failure in various ways. One of the most common O-ring failures is extrusion.

What is O-Ring Extrusion Failure?

Extrusion occurs when the elastomer is forced into the clearance gap between mating components under high pressure. This causes the material to become visibly nibbled, chipped, or ragged, leaving the O-ring looking tattered, while also negatively affecting the elastomer’s sealing performance.

Causes of Extrusion

Contributing factors to extrusion include:

Excessive pressure

Excessive clearances

Excessive gland fill

Low modulus or hardness elastomer

Irregular clearance gaps

Sharp gland edges

Improper sizing

The relationship between fluid pressure, clearance, and durometer is expressed visually in the graph below.

Common Preventions

There are numerous ways to prevent extrusion from occurring. One solution is reducing the clearance gap between the mating components. A reduced clearance gap gives little to no room for the elastomer to extrude. Precision machining can help achieve this tight tolerance.

Proper gland dimensions and correct O-ring sizing are critical, with consideration of gland fill. Gland fill is the percentage of the gland (groove) volume occupied by the compressed O-ring. The gland fill of the installed O-ring should not exceed 85% to allow space for compression, volume swell, and thermal expansion of the O-ring. If gland fill is too high, the O-ring occupies excessive space within the groove, leading to over compression and an increased risk of extrusion. If gland fill is too low, the O-ring may not compress adequately, resulting in an ineffective seal.

Using elastomer materials with a higher hardness durometer helps minimize the risk of extrusion. Harder elastomers are less malleable under high operating pressures, making them less prone to extrusion. In contrast, softer elastomers deform more easily and are more susceptible to being forced into clearance gaps.

Back-Up Rings or sometimes called anti-extrusion rings are an effective way to prevent elastomers from extruding into clearance gaps. These are thin rings made of hard durometer elastomers or hard plastic materials such as KasPex™ PEEK, PTFE, and nylon. Once in place these rings will provide essentially zero clearance. They support the elastomer by increasing its ability to withstand high pressures. A single backup ring is sufficient for one-directional pressure, whereas when pressure is bi-directional, backup rings are recommended on both sides of the O-ring.

Conclusion

Extrusion is preventable when following the correct measures. By understanding these solutions, it will significantly reduce the probability of encountering an O-ring extrusion failure.

If O-Ring extrusion failure occurs, reach out today for support in identifying and preventing this and other O-Ring failures.

Under high pressure, gases tend to permeate the surface of an elastomer, seeping into the material’s core. This happens until the internal pressure of a material creates an equilibrium with the external pressure of the fluid media. If the external pressure experiences a sudden and significant drop, the gases that had permeated the elastomer escapes to maintain equilibrium. The gases migrate rapidly and beyond the elastomer’s capacity to handle that change. This causes fissures and ruptures, as shown in the pictures above, and is referred to rapid gas decompression (RGD) or explosive decompression (ED).

It is well-known that fluorocarbon (FKM), despite being a widely used material, typically has poor low-temperature capabilities. To provide our customers with a low-temperature FKM sealing solution that resists rapid gas decompression, we have formulated the V9M2 compound using Viton™ GLT polymer.

This specialty compound combines the high-temperature resilience of FKM with enhanced performance at lower temperatures, delivering a more versatile sealing solution. Its extremely low compression set is ideal for temperature and pressure cycling environments. It also has a strong resilience to a broad range of chemicals, including hot water and steam. V9M2 has undergone third-party testing for low-temperature valve sealing performance. It achieved an outstanding result at a temperature of -40°C per MESC 77/312 standards for Fugitive Emission Production Testing.

V9M2 Advantages:

Enhanced low-temperature capabilities

Proven resistance to rapid gas decompression (RGD)

Low gas permeability

Outstanding mechanical properties

Exceptional resistance to petroleum, oil, and gas

Resistant to a broad range of chemicals, including hot water and steam

Good resistance in corrosive environments • Superior performance in pressure and temperature cycling applications

V9M2 also has undergone thirdparty testing set by some of the industry’s most respected regulating bodies, including:

NORSOK M-710 (Rev.2) RGD

API 6A Sour Gas Service

NACE TM0297 RGD

Historically, mud motor boots have been a limiting factor in performance for downhole tools. The boots can encounter issues during the installation process or while in application. Tension and torque forces that are involved in the installation of standard mud motor boots require usage of equipment that can accidentally damage the product.

While in an application boots undergo extreme tension and com-pression forces in addition to encountering various fluids and co-contaminants. Furthermore, thermal forces result in expansion of the grease packing and can create internal pressure within the boot. These elements can contribute to premature failure of the mud motor boot and result in costly down-time during drilling operations.

Taking various parameters into account, Hi-Tech Seals developed three specialty mud motor boot compounds, H7B1, H8B1, and H8B2, that improve reliability and increase product service life. These hydrogenated nitrile (HNBR) compounds offer significantly enhanced mechanical properties and chemical resistance over standard boot materials. These compounds increase ease of installation which can reduce assembly time and improve confidence in the reliability of the product as it leaves the facility.

H7B1, H8B1, and H8B2 Advantages:

Unique balance of strength and flexibility

Remarkable toughness

Excellent elongation properties

Great oil resistance

Good mechanical properties

Excellent tear strength

Great chemical resistance

Wide working temperature range

What is That White Dust on The Surface of my Rubber Seal?

This white, milky substance can appear on rubber components is called ‘bloom’. Rubber blooming occurs when compounding additives migrate to the material’s surface. It most commonly appears on nitrile, hydrogenated nitrile, and neoprene/chloroprene compounds.

Will it affect the seal’s performance?

While rubber blooming may not be aesthetically pleasing, it is normal and purely superficial. It does not affect the quality of the moulded product. If its appearance is unacceptable, it can be removed easily by washing the part in water or a light mineral oil.

Since blooming is normal and doesn’t affect the function of a seal, it isn’t considered a defect or a contaminant.

What causes rubber to bloom?

Two common agents used in the rubber curing process are sulfur and peroxide. When these curatives aren’t fully used up, they can appear on the surface as a white or grey dry powder.

Another chemical interaction that causes blooming is adding lubricants to the formulation to reduce friction. By design, the lubricant that is added is incompatible with the rubber.

This conflict results in the lubricating agent migrating to the surface, causing bloom. As the agent continually blooms, the component will continue to offer reduced friction over time. The elastomer’s basic properties remain largely unchanged.

It is worth noting that all lubricants must be compatible with fluid systems and adjacent surfaces to prevent complications and failures. Lubricant can be organic or inorganic:

Organic lubricants

Amides (flake or pellet form)

Waxes

Esters

Powdered PTFEs

Mineral oils

Inorganic lubricants

Graphite (powder or flake form)

MoS₂ (molybdenum disulfide)

V717, V9M2, & V866
Formulated for Low-Temperature Applications

Freezing conditions can be harsh on elastomeric seals. As temperatures drop below the material’s capabilities, elastomers can become more plastic-like. This change leads to reduced flexibility, increased brittleness, less rebound, and a diminished ability to maintain a proper seal.

To provide our customers with low-temperature sealing solutions while maintaining high-temperature performance and other key properties, we have formulated two specialty Viton™ compounds, V717 and V9M2, and a fluorocarbon (FKM) compound, V866.

Our V717 is a general-use low-temperature Viton™ compound that has undergone third-party testing for low-temperature valve sealing performance. It achieved an outstanding result at a temperature of -60°C per MESC SPE 77/312 standards for Fugitive Emission Production Testing.

Similarly, our V9M2, a Viton™ compound, achieved remarkable results at -40°C when tested with the same standards. V9M2 was formulated for environments where rapid gas decompression (RGD) may be a concern. It has undergone rigorous testing to ensure it meets industry standards for RGD and sour service conditions, including:

NORSOK M-710 (Rev.2) RGD

API 6A Sour Gas Service

NACE TM0297 RGD

TOTAL GS EP PVV 142 RGD

Our V866 is our FKM compound that features an 80A durometer with excellent resistance to both diesel and methanol. It also offers exceptional performance at temperatures as low as -40°C.

V717, V9M2, and V866 Advantages:

Low-temperature capability down to -60°C (V717)

Low-temperature capability down to -40°C (V9M2 & V866)
