The O-ring is the most widely used seal in history due to its simplicity, low cost, ease of installation, and small space requirements. O-rings are designed for both static and dynamic applications. A properly designed O-ring groove allows the O-ring to be squeezed diametrically out-of-round even before the application of pressure. The O-ring seals by distortion of its resilient elastic compound to fill the leakage path.
See our O-Ring Design Guide to understand ISO 3601 O-Ring standards, O-Ring design considerations, groove dimensions, and common O-Ring failure.
